Student outreach - Notre Dame 6th Form

Date

Notre dame group shotThe Leeds Nanotechnology Cleanroom had the pleasure of hosting A-level and BTEC students and staff from the Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College, Leeds, for an informative tour of our state-of-the-art facilities. During the visit, the attendees learned how different aspects of their studies can be applied within a cleanroom environment and explored various career opportunities in the semiconductor industry.

I would like to say thank you for the nanotechnology lab experience, it was eye opening to the potential careers in science and felt like a movie in real life. Thank you,

The tour included demonstrations of cutting-edge equipment and techniques used in nanotechnology research and development. Students were given an insight into the processes involved in fabricating semiconductor devices, including photolithography, etching, and even atomic layer deposition. This helped bridge the gap between their classroom studies and real-life applications. For example, they discovered how concepts like constructive and destructive interference, studied in A-level Physics, can be used to control a process, and experienced first-hand the importance of Health and Safety covered in BTEC Applied Science.

Thank you so much for showing us around the cleanroom. I never realised just what goes into making the electronic devices we take for granted. Very interesting.

Overall, the event was a resounding success, inspiring the visiting students to consider future studies and careers in this rapidly evolving field. The Leeds Nanotechnology Cleanroom looks forward to welcoming back students from Notre Dame, and to hosting similar educational tours in the future, fostering a deeper interest in science and technology among young learners. It has certainly opened my eyes to studying at the University of Leeds.
