TransPennine Outreach
Staff from the Leeds Nanotechnology Cleanroom reached out across the Pennines to visit The Oldham Academy North to introduce Year 9 and 10 pupils to cleanrooms, nanotechnology, and the wide range of careers available across science and engineering.
The visit highlighted the importance of early outreach, with many pupils surprised by the breadth of opportunities beyond what they typically associate with science — from advanced manufacturing and research to industry-based roles in cleanroom environments.
Having Rob come into school was fantastic for both our KS3 and KS4 students. Rob delivered a fabulous presentation to two groups of 30 students which really opened students’ eyes to the vast potential that science can provide for their future.
The Leeds Nanotechnology would like to thank The Oldham Academy North for the invitation and for their thoughtful feedback following the visit, which is just the first of a range of planned activities together.
Students loved seeing where so many nanotechnology components originate and learning about the intricacies of how they are made. This has genuinely helped raise aspirations, and I look forward to visiting the University of Leeds with students later in the year.
